‘I turned Down Spain Job’

 

Spain had an extremely disappointing World Cup exit to Russia in the last-16 of the tournament, with many including Sergio Ramos suggesting that the turmoil caused by Julen Lopetegui’s sacking just days before the tournament began was to blame.

Lopetegui was dismissed for the announcement that he would take up the vacant job at Real Madrid without telling the head of the Spanish FA of his decision until just before the announcement was made.

Former Spain defender Fernando Hierro was forced to step up into the role that Lopetegui, but after the defeat to Russia he decided to not continue in the role.

Luis Enrique, the former Barcelona manager, has since been appointed to to position on a permanent basis, but he was not the only candidate approached.

Rafa Benitez last managed in his native country when he spent a period at Real Madrid, but was sacked after less than a season at the Bernabeu.

Since then he has gone on to a successful spell at Newcastle United, who are a lower-profile club than he has been used to over the last 15 years, but has become a fans’ favourite.

Addressing the issue of whether he could have become the manager of ‘La Roja’, the former Liverpool boss revealed that “There was maybe a chance.

“But still I am here and I am happy to be here [at Newcastle]. I still feel young so I have plenty of time to do that.

“Spain I think are a very good team and they will be better in the future.” Benitez explained.
