Unai Emery sends clear message to Arsenal board over midfielder’s contract

Unai Emery has told Arsenal’s hierarchy that he wants to keep Aaron Ramsey and views the midfielder as an ‘important’ part of the team. The 27-year-old has just under a year remaining on his current deal and will be able to leave on a free transfer next summer if he fails to agree a new deal.

Ramsey has already returned to pre-season training under Emery. And the Arsenal manager has been impressed with the midfielder’s performances and has urged Arsenal to extend his contract. Asked why Ramsey has not signed a new deal with Arsenal, Emery replied: ‘This is one question for the player and for the club.

‘In my opinion, I’ve said to Ivan [Gazidis], Raul [Sanllehi] and Sven [Mislintat] that I think he’s an important player for me. ‘I’m very happy with him. For me, every day, every training session, he has the ambition I want. ‘He’s working with a quality, the type of ability that I want. I want to work with him.’
