Former Russia midfielder Andrei Karyaka said on Thursday that Croatia midfielder and captain Luka Modric was the best player at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
“Before the semi-finals I predicted that France and England would meet in the final. England have faltered after taking a lead against Croatia who played three 120-minute games and two penalty shootouts… I will support them [Croatia] in the final. [Luka] Modric is an absolute genius. I think that he is the best player of the World Cup,” Karyaka told journalists.
Modric started in Croatia’s all six games at the World Cup so far. The 32-year-old Real Madrid player was named the man of the match three times and has scored two goals at the tournament. Croatia, whose previous best result was their third place at the 1998 World Cup, will take on the winners of that tournament, France, in the final, which will be played in Moscow on Sunday.
