Real Madrid’s Casemiro to blame for Man United’s Fred ‘missing’ the World Cup

Brazil were turfed out the 2018 World Cup on Friday night by Belgium.

In a potential coming-of-age win for the Belgians, they beat Brazil 2-1 in their quarter-final tie.

A Fernandinho own goal and a terrific Kevin De Bruyne striker put Belgium 2-up. Renato Augusto came off the bench to score for Brazil.

Less than a month ago Manchester United confirmed the signing of Fred.

Fred, a 25-year-old Brazilian international, had been plying his trade in the Ukraine since 2013, when he joined Shakhtar from Internacional.

Shakhtar accepted a bid of around £50 million for their star man.

However many Man United fans are still waiting to see Fred in action after he played no part in Brazil’s World Cup campaign.

Following Brazil’s World Cup exit, manager Tite spoke about why he never brought Fred off the bench.

It isn’t because Man United’s newest signings wasn’t good enough. Rather he was injured the entire tournament:

Fred had a problem with his injury and failed to make a full recovery. In general and physical terms, the team flew. It was not the physical aspect that was decisive in defeat.

Just a day after his move to Old Trafford was essentially confirmed, Fred was brought back down to earth in a major way.

He was taken out in a challenge with Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro in Brazil training.

Not only did that injury force Fred out for the remainder of the session. It also ended up ending his World Cup chances.
