#Match Preview : England face Sweden for semi-final place in Russia

The Three Lions are determined to build on their last 16 victory over Colombia, but they face a tough opponent in the form of the Swedes. Time : 14:00 BST

England will attempt to keep their World Cup campaign alive in Samara on Saturday as they take on Sweden in the quarter-finals.

Gareth Southgate’s side booked their place in the last eight thanks to a dramatic penalty shootout win over Colombia, while the Swedes narrowly overcame Switzerland.

Sweden have not reached the semi-finals of the tournament since 1994, but the wait for England has been slightly longer, with the Three Lions not progressing to the final four since 1990.

Overview

England’s penalty shootout win over Colombia was a major psychological breakthrough for a nation that has been plagued by the dreaded 12-yard lottery at major tourmanents and it has served to heighten the sense of belief within Southgate’s squad that they can go on to win the World Cup.

Having thrown off those historical shackles, the Three Lions are further buoyed by the unbridled optimism of the ‘It’s Coming Home’ brigade and the fact that they find themselves on what most critics concur is the more favourable side of the knockout rounds. Indeed, if England can defeat Sweden on Saturday, one of Russia or Croatia stand in their way for a place in the final.

However, reaching the final of the World Cup is always easier said than done and they come up against a Sweden side that picked up crucial results against France, the Netherlands and Italy in qualifying, as well as topping a group containing Germany and Mexico in this tournament.

Having already come up against a spate of the world’s top teams en route to this point, Janne Andersson’s side will feel that they have little to fear from England and Sweden will be a difficult team to break down, even for a team with the competition’s top scorer in their ranks.

Head-to-head

  • Sweden and England face each other for the 25th occasion and a third time at a World Cup.
  • Of the previous 24 matches Sweden have won seven, England eight and nine have been drawn.
  • Both World Cup meetings were group games which ended even. The sides drew their opening match 1-1 in 2002 and then 2-2 in the final game in 2006. Sweden did not lead in either game and came back to equalise three times.
  • In eight competitive meetings, including qualifiers, Sweden have won twice, England once and five games have been drawn. The Three Lions’ only competitive win was a 3-2 victory at Euro 2012.

Sweden

  • Sweden are in the quarter-finals for the first time since 1994.

  • The Three Lions are the only side left in the tournament who are yet to keep a clean sheet in their four matches. They have never gone five consecutive games in the competition without a shut-out.
  • No England player has scored more World Cup goals in a single tournament than the six Harry Kane has scored in 2018. Gary Lineker also netted six in 1986, winning the Golden Boot in the process.
  • Kane has scored with all six of his shots on target so far.
  • He is the first player to score three penalties at a World Cup since Bulgaria’s Hristo Stoichkov in 1994.

Match Prediction

England 2- 0 Sweden : The thing that impressed us most about England against Colombia was the way they stood up to the provocation they faced.

Sweden’s strength is their organisation at the back, but England have got the players to open them up, especially out wide, and We can see them getting some joy when they come forward.
