Mourinho set to hijack Liverpool’s Swiss Messi deal

Xherdan Shaqiri could be handed a Premier League lifeline by Manchester United following Stoke’s relegation to the Championship. Jose Mourinho is weighing up a move for the Swiss winger, whose country crashed out of the World Cup to Sweden on Tuesday. Xherdan Shaqiri is a Swiss professional footballer who plays as a winger for Championship club Stoke City and the Swiss national team.

Shaqiri impressed in Switzerland’s route to the round of 16, with potential suitors alerted to the 26-year-old’s £12 million release clause. That includes Mourinho, who has also been linked with a move for Shaqiri’s former Stoke teammate Marko Arnautovic. Meanwhile, the United boss apparently “feels that some players are pricing themselves out of transfers” as he looks to make room in his squad for new arrivals.

Daley Blind and Matteo Darmian have both been told they are free to leave Old Trafford, but United face having to pay a portion of the duo’s wages to expedite their departures.
