Sergio Ramos was evasive when asked if it was the end of an era for Spain following their World Cup exit. There have been plenty of questions asking if the majority of the side, who were of course once so successful and dominated the world stage, will retire. Now, it seems that Ramos hopes the side can stick together, but was far from certain when giving his answer.
The Express report he was asked his opinion on a changing of the guard, and said: “Hopefully not. We have a team who can keep dreaming. Despite the criticism and doubts in the group stage, we redeemed ourselves today. “There will be players who come back and others who leave, but they’ll always have this pride. We couldn’t do any more. We left our souls on the pitch and played with pride. We gave everything.”
Ramos also pointed to the shootout, and noted that penalties are a lottery that anyone can win or lose. He added that the team can leave with their pride in tact, but are gutted to be eliminated. “They took us to penalties, which was the only way they could cause us problems. We had possession of the ball, but penalties are a lottery and we lost. It’s a very tough blow to take, but every Spaniard will feel proud. We feel more Spanish if we lose like this.Losing is very tough to take. Whenever you’re eliminated, it’s very painful. The team did everything possible, we were eager to redeem ourselves as a national team.”
