World Cup 2018: Bad news for Edinson Cavani before Uruguay vs France

Uruguay will take on France after both nations won their last-16 ties on Saturday by one goal margins. France saw off the challenge of Argentina with a 4-3 win. The scoreline slightly flattered the South Americans.

In the evening match, Uruguay knocked out European champions Portugal. Edinson Cavani opened with a sublime header in the first half. Pepe levelled for Portugal with a free header from a corner. Cavani sealed the win with an outstanding right-footed curler into the far side of the Portugal net. In the 73rd minute, Cavani was forced out the game with an injury. Struggling to walk, Cristiano Ronaldo went over to help Cavani leave the pitch.

After the game Cavani confirmed that he was forced out with a calf problem. However the PSG striker remained hopeful of returning against France. On Monday the full extent of Cavani’s injury is set to be made public. Uruguayan paper Ovacion are hoping that Cavani will make it, however they are already planning for the striker’s injury to be confirmed.

Uruguay didn’t train on Sunday, however Ovacion note that Cavani was limping around the training camp. The paper also announce “according to people close to the player, it is ‘highly unlikely’ that Cavani can play Friday against France.”
