Ramos opens up about his international career after shock World Cup exit

Sergio Ramos has promised he will not retire from international football and that he will be at the 2022 World Cup – even if he has a grey beard. Spain exited the 2018 edition of the tournament on Sunday courtesy of a penalty shoot-out defeat against unfancied hosts Russia after being held to a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes.

Veteran midfielder Andres Iniesta announced he would be leaving the national team after the defeat. But Ramos, who helped Real Madrid to the Champions League this season, insisted he will be in Qatar in four years time, when he will be 36-years-old.

‘F***, it’s difficult,’ Ramos said. ‘It’s so many hours, so much effort and so much dedication. Maybe this wasn’t our best moment but we go home without having lost a game. I would like to carry on playing [for Spain] for many more years because I’m going home with a terrible pain.’
