Peter Schmeichel Is Proud Of His Son Despite His Loss

Denmark’s Euros 1992 winner and Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel was in the stands as Croatia beat Denmark on penalties in the FIFA World Cup 2018 Round of 16 on Sunday. Peter, whose son Kasper was under the sticks for Denmark, cheered for his son and screamed at every kick the latter saved.

Peter is famous for his club and international exploits, even guiding United to a treble in 1999 and now his son Kasper also plays for Denmark and club Leicester City, who he won the Premier League title with two years ago. Peter was seen celebrating widly, punching his fist in the air when Kasper saved a Luka Modric penalty in the dying minutes of the extra time to take the match to penalty shootout.

It was a dramatic shootout, with Kasper saving a couple of penalties before Ivan Rakitic scored the decisive penalty to send Croatia in the quarter-finals. On the whole, Kasper saved three penalties in the entire match and yet ended up on the losing side. Peter, however, could not have been prouder.

He took to Twitter to share a picture of himself and a younger Kasper and said, “Lost for words. Can’t be more proud of my country, my son, his teammates, all the staff and our fantastic national coach Age Hareide. When all the tears have dried out we will realise how well we did #WorldCup.”
