The match may not rank as a World Cup classic but it was far from boring, the last 16 game between Uruguay and Portugal was an exhibition of attacking talents and beautiful goals that delights both fans and neutrals alike.
Portugal struggled against a very dynamic Uruguay side who took the game to the European champions from the blast of the whistle. The South American side who qualified from the group stage with a hundred percent record look hungry and they deservedly took the lead in the seventh minute through PSG striker Edinson Cavani.
The Europeans, led by the impressive Cristiano Ronaldo slowly grew into the game but his efforts and that of the rest of his teammates were met by stiff resistance by the Uruguayans.
Portugal came out the more determined side in the second half as they piled pressure on Uruguay. The European champions’ effort paid off in after Pepe pulled them level with a fantastic header from a corner kick. However, their joy was short-lived as Cavani put Uruguay ahead again minutes later with a fine strike to help seal the game for Uruguay and send Ronaldo and Portugal home.
