FIFA has fined Argentina’s football assocation £80,000 ($105,000) after their fans engaged in a series of offensive behaviours in their defeat to Croatia on Thursday.
Argentine fans at the Nizhny Novgorod stadium were caught on camera fighting opposing supporters, throwing objects, and participating in homophobic and insulting chants. In addition, FIFA charged that the Albiceleste failed to attend mandatory post-game interviews following the 3-0 defeat to their Group D rivals.
Already, FIFA has fined the Mexican FA for their supporters’ “discriminatory and insulting chants” at Russia 2018. Argentina’s heavy defeat to Croatia has left them on the brink of elimination from the World Cup at the group stage, despite boasting talented forwards such as Lionel Messi, Paulo Dybala, Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain.
