Poll reveals overwhelming results naming the GOAT

The World Cup is the biggest stage of all, and the question of which side will end up victorious is certainly one that’s being asked – and without a standout side, the football purists are asking if there will be a dark horse who ends up lifting the trophy.

The likes of Croatia have been impressive, not to mention Mexico and England, while the likes of Germany and Argentina have struggled – leaving the group stages wide open and the final round of games still being on a knife edge for many of the sides.

Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi? It’s the age old question, yet it seems that when it comes to the player people think makes the most difference to a side who aren’t quite, shall we say, world class, Ronaldo is the GOAT.

Messi may be better in one of the best club sides the world has seen, but after his displays for Argentina, Diego Simeone saw his angry voicemail leaked, where he questioned Messi and noted that in his view, he’d rather have Ronaldo in a sub-standard team.

After the comments made by Simeone, Marca ran a poll, and asked fans who they’d rather in an ‘ordinary’ team, and it was Ronaldo who came out on top, with 61% of the vote.

Nearly 200,000 people voted in the poll and after seeing the opening stages of the World Cup, it shouldn’t come as a massive shock that Messi’s stock has somewhat fallen in the public view.
