Fake World Cup trophies loaded with drugs seized in Argentina

The FIFA World Cup 2018 started on a disappointing note for 2014 runners-up Argentina, who are yet to open their win account in Russia. While the Argentine fans in Russia are disheartened and hoping for a miracle, back home, the local police have busted a drug smuggling racket in the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires, trying to spoil the World Cup atmosphere.

Argentinian police as per an AFP report busted a drug smuggling gang that was using replicas of the iconic World Cup trophies to hide drugs. Marijuana and cocaine in large amount were recovered from the replicas. At least six people were arrested in the raid conducted by the security officials in Isidro Casanova in La Matanza Partido, Greater Buenos Aires.

Around 1.5 kg of marijuana and cocaine was confiscated from the site. The gang in a bid to use the popularity of the ongoing World Cup used the replica of the trophy to attract the buyers. All arrested are likely to be handed severe imprisonment sentences.

“The drug convictions must be strictly complied with, they do not go out of business, those who are imprisoned have to be imprisoned and serve their sentence.”

“It is important that they be imprisoned, that they not return to the business.”  AFP quoted Buenos Aires security minister, Cristian Ritondo as saying.

Miles away in Russia, the Argentine national team is struggling to make an impact at the biggest football tournament. The Albiceleste after being held to a 1-1 draw against debutants Iceland were subjected to a humiliating 3-0 defeat at the hands of Croatia. Their tumbling campaign was provided a ray of hope with Nigeria’s win over Iceland, but only a win in their final group stage clash will see Messi and co make it to the knockout rounds, provided Croatia does them a favour by beating or drawing Iceland
