Broken nose leaves Germany’s Rudy in doubt for South Korea clash

Bayern Munich midfielder, Sebastian Rudy is a doubt for Germany’s final group match against South Korea after suffering a suspected nose break during the 2-1 win over Sweden on Saturday evening. Making his first ever World Cup start, the midfielder was forced off at the half-hour mark after being booted on the face. He couldn’t stop bleeding and coach Joachim Low replaced him with Manchester City ace, İlkay Gündoğan.

Toni Kroos then scored a 95th-minute winner after Marco Reus had cancelled an Ola Toivonen opener for Sweden to complete a gripping comeback and move Germany up to second place in Group F with two games played. Victory over South Korea on Wednesday would make sure of Germany’s place in the knockout phase but head coach Joachim Low told reporters he could be without Rudy in central midfield.

“Sebastian Rudy may well have broken his nose. It wouldn’t stop bleeding, so we had to take him off. He may still be able to play on Wednesday though. We’ll have to wait and see,” he said. Jerome Boateng will miss the clash with South Korea through suspension, having been sent off eight minutes from time against Sweden. “Mats Hummels will probably be able to play and that offers another variant in the back line.”
