World Cup 2018 : Nigeria’s Ekong wins Iceland’s respect after sweet gesture


Nigeria’s William Troost-Ekong consoled Gylfi Sigurdsson after he missed a penalty on the 83rd minute of the match between Iceland and Nigeria at the Volgograd Arena on Friday.

Finnbogason was brought down inside the box by Ebuehi in the 81st minute of the match and the referre refused to award a penalty to the World Cup first timers. However, after requests, the referee asked for a review. He rushed to check the replays and after seeing them, he awarded Iceland a penalty.

Sigurdsson, a seasoned campaigner was up against Nigeria’s young goalkeeper Francis Uzoho. With Iceland down by two goals, it was the perfect opportunity for the tiny nation to score and then make a late charge to equalise towards the end of the game. But, the veteran failed to keep his nerves and blasted the ball over the crossbar.

Immediately, the Iceland No.10 shook his head and was walking towards the half-way line with a disappointed look on his face. That is when Ekong came running in and patted his shoulder and consoled the Icelander before going on with the game.
