Few matches at the 2018 World Cup will end as dramatically as Germany’s clash with Sweden.
A late Toni Kroos goal gave his side three points, seemingly against the odds after Jerome Boateng had been sent off earlier in the second half.
Now Germany is at 15/2 (8.50) in their latest World Cup winner odds. They face South Korea on matchday three and are in with a good chance of making the knockout stages against a side that have already been eliminated from the competition – at least according to the bookmakers.
The defending champions were 1-0 down at half time in Sochi thanks to a well worked opening goal from Ola Toivonen. That left Joachim Low’s side facing the prospect of exiting the tournament at the earliest possible stage having already lost their opening clash with Mexico.
The response after the interval was almost immediate with Marco Reus restoring parity on the score sheet before Kroos broke Swedish hearts with a well worked set piece goal five minutes into added time.
While the comeback victory might galvanise Die Mannschaft, there are still plenty of questions to answer for the defending champions who looked unorganised and wasteful in possession over the course of their opening two games in Russia.
