Why VAR will be investigated

FIFA are investigating the apparent failure of the Video Assistant Referee system after England were denied two clear penalties on Monday.

Gareth Southgate’s side should have been awarded two spot-kicks as Harry Kane was clearly manhandled by Ferjani Sassi in the area. But Colombian referee Wilmar Roldan waved away England’s appeals and the VAR officials also failed to take action.

That comes on top of Brazil’s complaints to FIFA after they felt they were denied two key decisions in their draw with Switzerland. These instances have left major questions over VAR, with FA chiefs waiting to see the results of FIFA’s review.

FA technical director Dan Ashworth has already completed a debrief on Monday’s game and believes the team were wronged, but English football’s governing body will not take any action until it is known whether FIFA will intervene — and publicly explain decisions.
