Colombia 1-2 Japan

Colombia will look to top scorer Radamel Falcao for inspiration when they take on Japan in their Group H FIFA World Cup opener here on Tuesday.

Only four of the 32 teams in the World Cup are yet to play their opening matches and they will be in action today. Colombia have tougher outings against Poland and Senegal after the Japan game and the Andean nation will look to repeat their group stage 4-1 2014 World Cup triumph over the Blue Samurais.

Colombia are involved in yet another entertaining World Cup game, seeing Carlos Sanchez sent off for handball just three minutes in, Kagawa dispatching the subsequent penalty with ease. However, the South Americans kept pushing forward, and Quintero equalised with a clever free-kick under the wall that just crept over the line! It’s 1-1 at the break!

In the second half, Yuya Osaka scored the winner for Japan as they beat Colombia in their Group H game to become the first Asian side to beat a South American team at the World Cup.

Poland 1-2 Senegal

Poland were widely expected to qualify for the knockout rounds but after suffering a seventh loss in their last nine World Cup matches, FIFA’s eighth-ranked team are in danger of making an early exit.

Thiago Cionek’s own goal, the defender deflecting in a shot from Idrissa Gueye, handed Senegal the lead in the 37th minute. Senegal doubled their lead when M’Baye Niang took advantage of a mix-up between Grzegorz Krychowiak and Wojciech Szczesny to finish with ease.

Adam Nawalka’s side set up an exciting finish when Krychowiak somewhat made amends from his error by heading home a Kamil Grosicki free-kick, but they could not find a late leveller.

Russia 3-1 Egypt

World Cup hosts fine form continued on Tuesday 19 June as they pummeled Egypt 3-1 in the second Group A match played at Saint Petersburg Stadium.

The hosts came from the break and pushed the game to their opponents.  Zobnin’s long-range effort was turned into the net by Fathi following pressure Dzyuba. Fathi’s own goal was the fifth being witness in this year’s competition.

12 minutes later Cheryshev beat  Egypt’s keeper after a cut back from Fernandes and the host took a 2-0 lead. Ilya Kutepov combined with Artem Dzyuba and the latter netted the third goal that saw his side increase the hopes on reaching the last 16.

Mohammed Salah pulled one back for Egypt from the penalty spot but it was too late for them to come back. The win means that Russia tops pool A with 6 points and eight goals.
