Sainsbury’s has been accused of sexism over its World Cup clothes range for kids, which features just one item for girls. On its website a mum discovered 21 tops for boys including T-shirts and polo shirts.
But, there was just one option for girls – a T-shirt with the word “LOVE” in sequins in which the “O” is represented by a football. The discrepancy was revealed by parent Sarah Palfreeman, before being corrected by the retailer. She wrote on Twitter: “The difference between @sainsburys ‘girl’ World Cup clothes vs ‘boys’ is shocking. Young girls enjoy football too.”
Sam Smethers, chief executive of the Fawcett Society, which campaigns for women’s rights, said: “Marketing like this is not only outdated and lacking in imagination, it’s harmful because the message to girls is football isn’t for you.”
