Russia 2018 match day 2: A day defined by late drama

If the first day and the second day of competition at the World Cup is anything to go by, then football fans are in for a treat over the next one month. So far, the first two days of action has produced 13 goals, with the last game of the second day producing six goals.

Nightmare for African teams

Two of Africa’s contingent to Russia were in action yesterday but proceedings could best be described as nightmarish, it was basically a day to forget for the continent’s representatives as both of them fell to dramatic and unfortunate defeats.

First up was Egypt. The former Africa Champions had high hope going into their first game of the competition particularly as word emerged earlier in the day that their talisman, Mohammed Salah could start against Uruguay. However, some Egyptian fans must have had premonitions of what is to come after the Liverpool forward was left on the bench. Salah’s absence was sorely felt as the North Africans failed to convert numerous chances that came their way. Things got more depressing for the Pharaohs when after putting up a valiant effort they fell to a late goal and eventually lost the game 1-0.

Up next Morocco. Despite the fact that that the Match between the Africans and Iraq lacked excitement of the Egypt game, Morocco’s 1-0 defeat was no less depressing for supporters of African football. The game was invariably heading for a bore draw until Morocco conceded late, through an own goal.

It was the Ronaldo show against Spain

Now that was a game. The match is a typical representation of what the World Cup is all about. it was supposed to be the star game of the first round of matches and both teams delivered. The game ended in a pulsating 3-3 draw but it will be remembered for the heroics of and Cristiano Ronaldo. The Real Madrid Star put his country ahead twice and scored a late equalizer through a fantastic free kick. Many pundits believe the match help confirmed Ronaldo’s place as one of the World Cup greats, and to be fair, that assessment is not far from the truth.
