Suarez Shoots Blanks vs Egypt

Luis Suarez had an afternoon to forget in front of goal as Uruguay scraped a victory in their opening match of the World Cup.

It was left to Jose Gimenez to save the South American’s sides blushes in the final minutes of the game, heading home to secure a 1-0 win over Salah-less Egypt at the Ekaterinburg.

It was an uncharacteristically poor performance from Suarez, who missed a host of chances to give Uruguay the lead.

The first was 24 minutes into the game. Suarez was already running away in celebration before he realized he had fired his four-yard shot into the side netting.

The next would come just after half-time. He directed his low effort into the legs of Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy after being played in by Edinson Cavani.

His worst, though, would come later in the half when he needlessly delayed his shot when one-on-one with the keeper, allowing El-Shenawy to come out and claim it.

It summed up a rather sluggish and clumsy performance on the ball from Suarez, one which saw him finish with the lowest passing accuracy (69 per cent) of any Uruguay player.

Some footballers need more time to warm up than others and head coach Oscar Tabarez will be hoping Suarez can get back to his best against Saudi Arabia and Russia.
