Olivier Giroud: ‘England can do well at 2018 World Cup’

France and Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud has claimed that England can do well at this summer’s World Cup in Russia but must remember to take each game as it comes.

The Three Lions boast one of the youngest and least capped squads at the tournament amid lessened expectations for the nation.

Despite their relative inexperience, some fans and pundits have suggested that an England squad without less pressure could do better than previous squads, a sentiment echoed by Giroud.

“I think England can do well,” the former Arsenal striker told the Evening Standard. “Everything will depend on how the rounds pan out, but I think they can go a long way.

“But, like us, they cannot make any assumptions and start planning who they could play in this round or that. That’s not the way the World Cup works.

“It’s better just to concentrate on the games you are facing in the group stage first.”

England have not reached the semi-finals of a major tournament since Euro 1996, which was played on home soil.
