Lopetegui might not coach Spain in the upcoming FIFA World Cup

Surprising news coming out of Spain’s camp just two days ahead of their debut against Portugal in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Coach Julen Lopetegui was named Real Madrid’s manager on Tuesday and while he will only take care of the team when Spain is out of the World Cup, rumors suggest that Director of Football Fernando Hierro and President Luis Rubiales are extremely angry with Lopetegui for letting his deal with Real Madrid go public ahead of the World Cup.

In fact, Rubiales didn’t confirm that Lopetegui will be on the bench when Spain take on Portugal this Friday.

“We will do what’s best for the National Team,” said Rubiales when asked about the matter.

The truth is that it would be very problematic for Spain to name a new coach just two days ahead of the first game. The timing was not appropriate for them but sacking Lopetegui right now seems quite unlikely.

Lopetegui will speak in press conference later today.
