Alvaro Odriozola; Spain’s gem at the back

In a squad with the likes of Sergio Ramos, Andres Iniesta and Isco, it was astonishing to see a player from La Liga minnows Real Sociedad. Perhaps the most bizzare fact is that the player is a defender. That is just how good Alvaro Odriozola is.

The 22-year-old right back plays for Real Sociedad and already has 50 appearances for the club. He’s a pure defender who is calm and plays much older than his age. A surprise inclusion in the Spain squad, he provides depth but may be good enough to start a couple games at the cup and can really help himself when it comes to a move to a big club. Expect Real Madrid and Barcelona to show interest, as well as big clubs in other countries.

Although Madrid’s Dani Carvajal is expected to start at righ back for La Roja, mixing up with the best should definitely do Odriozola a world of good, that’s where he is headed anyway.
