France coach Didier Deschamps says Olivier Giroud should be fit for their opening World Cup game against Australia on Saturday. The Chelsea striker was hurt when he clashed heads with defender Matt Miazga during France’s 1-1 draw with USA in Lyon on Saturday, leaving both players bloodied.
The 31-year-old was treated for a head wound by France’s medical staff for five minutes on the pitch before being replaced by Ousmane Dembele. Deschamps revealed Giroud’s injury was not as bad as initially feared and he should be fit to face Australia in the Group C clash in Kazan in six days’ time.
“Giroud has a beautiful cut of six centimetres but he should be ready.” Deschamps. France’s final warm-up game ended all-square after Julian Green’s surprise opener for USA in the first half was cancelled out by a Kylian Mbappe strike late in the second half.
