Former England defender justifies Wilshere’s omission by Southgate

Rio Ferdinand has supported Gareth Southgate’s decision to omit Jack Wilshere from his England World Cup squad.

Southgate named his final 23-man squad for the upcoming tournament in Russia ahead of their warm-up victories against Nigeria and Costa Rica and chose to leave Wilshere at home, stating he was not effective enough towards the end of last season.

The 26-year-old scored only once in the Premier League, with three assists, and Ferdinand has claimed Southgate was right to leave Wilshere out of his England squad.
