Some Fun facts about the FIFA World Cup

The first World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930 and was the brainchild of Jules Rimet, then president of FIFA. He even named the trophy after himself but the original Jules Rimet trophy was stolen. It was however recovered four months prior to the 1966 edition. The design we see today was introduced in 1974 and called the ‘FIFA World Cup Trophy’.

Germany have been the highest goal scorers in all three previous editions of the World Cup. They scored 18 goals in their World Cup winning campaign of 2014, 16 goals in 2010 and 14 goals in 2006.

Brazil are the team with the most number of World Cup trophies, having won the competition on five occasions. Brazil were crowned World Champions in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002.

Germany’s Miroslav Klose is the all-time highest goal scorer in the tournament with 16 goals from 24 matches. Klose was part of Germany’s squad in 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014.

Despite winning the World Cup on four different occasions, Germany have also lost the most number of finals. They finished runners-up in 1966, 1982, 1986 and 2002.
