22 Years later, Bonfrere Receives Atlanta Olympics House Gift


As reward for leading Nigeria’s U-23 team to win the gold medal in the football event of the Atlanta ’96 Olympic Games, Johannes Bonfrere, then Coach of the Olympic team, the players and the members of the technical crew were promised a house by the then head of state, the late General Sani Abacha.

22 years later, The Dutchman, who later became coach of the Super Eagles, has been presented with the keys to a three-bedroom apartment in Abuja by Babatunde Raji Fashola, the Minister for Power, Works and Housing on behalf of the Federal Government.

Bofrere led “Dream Team I”, as the team was known, to defeat Argentina in the final of the Olympic football event, to become the first African nation to achieve that feat.
