Without a doubt, De Gea remains Spain’s first choice goalkeeper

There is no debate. David De Gea is the man to guard the goal for Spain’s national team at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and his first challenge in the highly anticipated competition will be on June 15, against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal.

De Gea is his own worst critic. He knows he failed against Switzerland but believes that, if there was a time for a flaw to appear with La Roja, the moment was now and not in the actual World Cup.

The best goalkeeper of the Premier League remains calm, as his sluggish performance on Sunday doesn’t seem to have affected the Spaniard so much.

In addition, the support from coach Julen Lopetegui and his teammates has also helped him remain calm and confident in himself.

For example, at the end of the match against Switzerland, Jordi Alba stressed that his team have the utmost confidence in the goalkeeper.

There have been three main failures from De Gea that have stood out this season, as alongside the goal conceded against Switzerland, Argentina’s goal at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano and Sevilla’s second goal in the tie against Manchester United top a short list.

The World Cup is nearing its start date and after these glitches, there have been some questions about his spot in Spain’s starting line-up.

However, De Gea is solely focused on giving his best and that is why he believes the best thing is to continue working and getting his body and mind ready for the competition in Russia.

With that in mind, Lopetegui has no intention to change his main man in between the posts.
