Germany defender not retiring after The World Cup

Matt Hummels has dismissed claims that this years World Cup could be his last major international tournament as a player.

The Bayern Munchen and  Germany centre-back, 29, will be 31 by the time UEFA EURO 2020 rolls around, but has no intention of retiring from international football post-Russia 2018.

“I don’t believe the World Cup will be my last major tournament,” Hummels said from Germany’s pre-tournament training base in Eppan, northern Italy. “Playing at the EUROs at the age of 31 is definitely doable.”

Hummels did say, however, that he does not expect to still be playing for Germany at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

“I’ll already be 34 at the 2022 World Cup,” he explained. “Right now, I don’t see myself having the level or strength to keep up, with it taking place in the winter.”
