Buffon banned for 3 matches by UEFA after scuffle with referee

Former Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has been handed a three-match ban by UEFA for the battle he had with the referee during Juventus’ aggregate loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League.

While Buffon was given the red card by English referee Michael Oliver for shouting at his face and pushing him for having given Real Madrid a last-minute penalty, UEFA punished Buffon for comments he made about the referee after the match.

Buffon was enraged by Oliver’s decision and made sure he was heard, for which he received the red card but even after the match, Buffon said the referee had been out of his depth, should have been in the stands eating crisps and must have a garbage bin for a heart.

“The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body has decided to suspend Juventus player Gianluigi Buffon for three UEFA competition matches for which he would be otherwise eligible,” UEFA said in a statement on its website.
