It’s Germany’s World Cup Social Media ban Mesut Ozil & Ilkay Gundogan’s fault

Most football fans will understand the need to ban alcohol.

As for sex, this isn’t the first time such a banning order has been issued around a big competition.

But no social media? Why have the German players been banned for engaging with fans and updating their profiles?

According to El Confidencial, Low reached his decision after recent updates from Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil and Man City’s Ilkay Gundogan.

A few weeks ago, both Gundogan and Ozil uploaded pictures on their social media channels with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Both Arsenal and Man City’s stars are of Turkish descent. Yet those pictures with Erdogan sparked a backlash against the German international stars.

DFB president Reinhard Grindel was quick to address the issue. He tweeted:

Football and the DFB (German football federation) defend values which are  not fully taken into account by Mr Erdogan.

That’s why it’s not good that international players allow themselves to be  manipulated for his electoral campaign.

In doing that, our players have certainly not helped the DFB’s work on integration.
