Lionel Messi gives his take on Argentina’s World Cup chances

Lionel Messi has had a tough time whilst playing for Argentina.

Messi has lost three finals with his country including the 2014 World Cup final and has often found his international heartbreak too hard to take.

In club football, there is nothing that Messi hasn’t won and he is debatably football’s greatest ever player.

Messi is absolutely desperate to win his first international tournament this summer in what could be his final World Cup.

Argentina haven’t won the World Cup since 1986 and with a squad as strong as the one they are taking to Russia, now is the time for them to retain their title.

Strangely, the Argentinians struggled to qualify for the World Cup but now that they are there, they will do all that they can to get their hands on the trophy.

“I would change a Barcelona title for one with the national team,” Messi told Argentinean TV channel El Trece.

Messi added:

“Winning a title with Argentina would be something unique.”

“I have great faith in this group, we are working very well, we have players with a lot of capacity and experience.”

“We do not have to throw out the message that we are going to become World Champions because we are the best because in reality, it’s not like that.”

Messi conceded to the fact that there are better teams than Argentina such as Germany, Brazil and Spain, the last of whom beat Argentina 6-1 in the last international break.

Argentina have been named in Group D this summer alongside Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria.

The two time Champions are expected to top the group but it will be a real challenge if they want to go all the way and win the tournament.
