Sam Johnstone’s emotional goodbye to Aston Villa ahead of Manchester United return

Sam Johnstone signed off with an emotional message to the Aston Villa fans as his loan spell at the club ended with play-off final defeat at Wembley.

The goalkeeper will return to Manchester United this summer and decide whether a move elsewhere appeals with plenty of Premier League interest already confirmed.

Boss Steve Bruce knows that Villa will not be able to land the stopper on another loan deal and there’s no chance of a permanent move after missing out on promotion.

Johnstone is also now ready for the top-flight after 18 months in the Championship with Villa.

After the final game of his loan spell, he said:

“Villa fans, sorry we couldn’t get over the line for you, we are hurting as much as you.

“You guys sent shivers down my spine when you sang at home, away and especially yesterday (at Wembley).”

He continued an Instagram post with:

“I am proud to say I have played for Aston Villa.

“To be able to perform in front of a full Villa Park for the past 18 months has been so special to me, with ups and downs along the way, learning so much in each game and in every day.
