What Argentina misses with Romero’s absence

Argentina has already confirmed that goalkeeper Sergio Romero has been ruled out of the World Cup with a knee injury.

So what experience does the nation miss from the experienced keeper?

Sergio Romero is a 31-year-old Manchester United player who has won 94 caps for the country. He has been a pillar and played in the 2014 World Cup final defeat to Germany.

He is also the most capped goalkeeper in the history of the Argentine national team and has played over 90 times since his debut in 2009, representing the country in two World Cups and at three Copa América tournaments.

He was part of the team that finished as runner-up in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, as well as in the 2015 and the 2016 Copa América tournaments. He also was part of the team which won gold at the 2008 Olympics.

The keeper has been replaced by Chelsea’s Willy Caballero, with two caps, and River Plate’s Franco Armani, who is uncapped. Tigres’ Nahuel Guzman has also been called into the squad as Romero’s replacement.

Argentina begin their World Cup campaign against Iceland on 16 June before games against Croatia and Nigeria in Group D.
