England players start World Cup camp

England’s World Cup squad will meet up on Monday as the first stage of preparations for this summer’s tournament get underway.

The players will arrive at St George’s Park throughout the morning. The team will hold an informal meeting before a light training session in the afternoon.

Their first full training session will take place on Tuesday, with coverage live on Sky Sports News

Seven of the 23-man squad will be absent as the Chelsea and Manchester United players have been given a week’s leave after the FA Cup final, while Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson are with Liverpool ahead of the Champions League final.

Tom Heaton, James Tarkowski and Jake Livermore from the standby squad will bolster the numbers, but Adam Lallana is also away with Liverpool.

Lewis Cook, also on the standby list, will be at England’s training base but has been selected for the U21s squad to play at the Toulon Tournament.

England do not play until June 2 against Nigeria, meaning Gareth Southgate has almost a fortnight to prepare his side, a luxury he has never had before as manager of the senior team.

England’s first game of the World Cup is on June 18 against Tunisia, meaning most of the squad will get almost a month of preparation.
