Why Miguna Miguna might not be Nairobi’s Deputy Governor

Controversial lawyer Miguna Miguna has been nominated to be the deputy governor of Nairobi by Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, but it is still not sure if he would take that position. Miguna’s lawyers Cliff Ombeta and Nelson Havi said  he should accept the position, there seem to be legal troubles.

The Constitution, under the Citizenship and Leadership clause mentions two reasons that may be used to kill his hopes. One; “A person is not eligible for election or appointment to a State office unless the person is a citizen of Kenya.” Immigration Department PS Gordon Kihalangwa says that Miguna lost his Kenyan birthright when he acquired Canadian citizenship hence the need to make a fresh application for a passport.

“The ID card Miguna has today (April 3, 2018)  is an invalid document. Even if he regains his citizenship he will have to go to the National Registration Bureau to get an ID so that he can process his passport,” Kihalangwa told the Parliamentary Committee.
