An armed group has killed 26 people in northwest Burundi days ahead of a constitutional referendum.
It is believed that attackers were terrorists from neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.
“The terrorists coming from and returning to Congo shot and burned: 26 dead and seven wounded,” the security minister said.
The tension escalated as a constitutional referendum is held on May 17 which could allow Nkurunziza to stay in power for 16 more years.
