Ngilu selected as only Kenyan to oversee Nigeria elections

Due to her political mileage, Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu will be joining a 38-member delegation of key political figures to oversee Nigeria’s Saturday (February 16) general elections.

Mrs Ngilu was chosen to the high powered delegation for being the senior-most female political leader. The only Kenyan political leader to take part in this mission, following nomination by American based National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the International Republican Institute (IRI).

In a press statement on Tuesday, Mrs Ngilu is said to have been selected because she’s the senior-most female political leader in the country, having served in various elective capacities over her 27 years in public service an also being the first woman to ever run for president in Kenya.

She will on Wednesday attend the ceremony for the signing of the National Peace Accord between the leading candidates – President Muhammadu Buharu and his main rival former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Other delegates that will be joining her will include former Latvian President Vaira Vike Freiberga, US Ambassador to Kenya Johnnie Carson, former Gambian Vice President Fatoumata Tambajang; IRI Vice Chairman Randy Scheunemann and Derek Mitchell, the NDI’s third president.
