Gor Mahia have been eliminated in this year’s edition of the Sportpesa Supercup at the first hurdle following a shock penalty shoot-out loss to Mbao FC.
After a goalless first half, the defending champions went ahead in the 52nd minute through a Dennis Oliech penalty after Mbao defender was adjudged to have have stopped a goal bound shot with his hand. K’Ogallo had numerous chances to add on to their lead later in the half but they lacked a clear cutting edge in the final third.
Mbao FC, sensing that Gor Mahia were tiring, eventually upped the tempo an were rewarded with 15 minutes to go when a mishit shot found its way into the box where Mbao’s striker was unmarketable and duly directed the ball past the keeper to even the scores.
The match would end in a 1-1 draw and penalties would follow. Mbao missed their third penaltie handing Go the iitiative but Captain Harun Shakava missed the following kick and left back Shafik Batambuze directe the final kick against the cross bar. Mbao captian converted their final spot kick to send them into the Semi Finals and K’Ogallo packing!
AFC Leopards will play Tanzania giants Simba in the other Sportpesa Supercup tie scheduled for today.
