“At this point, I bid farewell to my club of birth and choice, Gor Mahia. You will remain in my heart. Mount Kenya is a dream I have held over a long time and this will only be good news for Kenyan football. Our immediate focus is to win the 2018/2019 Kenyan Premier League title.”Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria on the 11th of November 2018.

Fast forward to May 2oth 2019 and Mount Kenya United has been relegated from the Kenyan Premier League having collected a mere 18 points from 31 matches. The team has lost five on the trot and are in danger of finishing the season with the worst run ever experienced in the Kenyan Premier League.

The lowest point came when they were forced to hand a walkover to Gor Mahia because there was no means of transport to take them from Nairobi to Machakos! Imagine that, a Kenya Premier League team, supported by a man who has direct access to the president missing a match due to lack of transport.

Moses Kuria, like any other politician, made promises to Mount Kenya Unite but ducked out at the first sign of trouble. There are claims that the players are unpaid for close to five months and most are almost giving up on their careers.

It is a sad state of affairs but it should never have gotten to this point had Moses Kuria held his end of the bargain. Internal wrangles forced another walkover against Mathare United as players were on strike which begs the question, was Kuria when all this was happening?

How many matches has he attended this season? Does he know that ‘his team’ has been relegated and are running on empty pockets? The quote that starts this article should have given Mount Kenya United hope of a better future but 5 months later, all it looks like is a PR stunt from an opportunist politician!
