Mother and sons accused of killing woman for reportedly running a brothel

A mother and her two sons were today charged with the murder of their relative following a domestic scuffle.

Jeneva Lumonye, Sabestian Mutanyi, Stanleous Chumba were alleged to have assaulted Florence Khamati on April 20 at their Shisele village, Kakamega South District.

According to documents tendered in court, a scuffle is said to have ensued after Ms Lumonye alleged that the Ms Khamati had established a brothel in a nearby shopping center. She accused Khamati of ‘supplying young girls’ to the purported brothel and benefiting from the proceeds of prostitution.

Lumonye is said to have been joined by her three sons, one who was not charged because he is a minor and jointly attacked Khamati who fell down unconscious. Her body was collected at the scene of crime by police officers who were informed of the assault and took the body to Kakamega County General Hospital Mortuary.

The three who have been in custody since April 21 were charged after the investigators told the court that psychiatric tests confirmed that they were mentally fit to plead to murder charge. A post mortem examination conducted by the Chief Pathologist Dixon Mchana revealed that the cause of death was consistent with sudden cardiac arrest.

The three denied the charges when they appeared before High Court Judge Jesse Njagi. They were each granted Sh300,000 bond with a surety of similar amount.The matter shall be heard on July 25.
