The Kenyan Government’s 1.5% Housing Levy Fund imposed on employees angered many Kenyans who did not see any logic in the new directive.

Using social media trending phrase ‘Government’ and ‘Housing Levy Fund’ on Twitter, they expressed their dislike saying the Government is forcing on them the house levy deductions.

In the new directive, a new statutory deduction of 1.5 per cent will be effected with the deductions going to the National Housing Development Fund. The funds will go towards financing the government’s affordable housing program under Big Four Agenda.

Statehouse through Spokesperson Kanze Dena has now cleared the air on all the fears many Kenyans have with regards to the Housing Levy.

Kanze has said that the Housing Levy is an investment and that after contrinuting for 15 years and one fails to get a house, he/she will be refunded his/her money back.

“The housing levy is an investment. If you contribute and after 15 years you will not have got a house under the #AffordableHousing agenda, you will get your money back. This is about giving Kenyans better & dignified roofs over their heads” said Kanze.

In a public notice, the Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development ministry in conjunction with Kenya Revenue Authority also require employers to match the employee’s contribution by a similar margin. Total deductions to the Housing Fund Levy should not exceed Sh5, 000.

Amid the confusion surrounding the entire House Levy Deductions, Even Kanze Dena’s latest assurances to Kenyans seem to have done little to convince them that the whole project is a noble idea with many still expressing their doubts on the same.
