Kenyans on Twitter have started a # sadakaboycott in a bid to make the church voice out their views on the Huduma Namba and the house Levy fund. The plan is to drop red cards with a note to the priests directing them to speak about Huduma Namba and house levy fund, instead of money.
In a tweet one @wmnjoya tweeted that the best place to protest from is in church because public places are easily accessible by police who could badly interfere with the protests against the two issues.
We need a place to protest #ResistHudumaNamba#ResistHousingFundLevy. If we meet at Uhuru Park, we will be few and easily subdued. But every Sunday, millions of Kenyans meet at churches. So we protest there. There are not enough cops to cover all the churches. #Sadakaboycott
Looking for Kenyans to develop the idea of a #Sadakaboycott. Since we meet on Sundays at churches, let’s take our protest against
huduma number and the housing levy there. There are not enough police for all the churches. Then we sing the tunetoa ndugu toa dada (usitoe ndugu ..) @wmnjoya tweet read.
Kot backed this motion up saying that boycotting offering and tithes would make church leaders speak on the matter.
Here are some of the comments
The advantage of protest through offering is that it is anonymous. Like the ballot. So instead money, we put in a protest note telling the church to call for an end of #HudumaNamba and the housing levy. Over a few weeks, people will get bolder #sadakaprotest
Suggest a colour, we wear that on Sunday, do our duty in #Sadakaboycott then take a pic and post after service. Helps build confidence in the fearful and galvanise around the cause. @RedVestsProtest have already given a head start
We are asking church goers to start small. Refuse to give sadaka, and put a red card in the offering. Or write a note with #ResistHudumaNamba#ResistHousingFundLevy and put it in. When we are faithful with small things, God will make us faithful with bigger ones. #Sadakaboycott
In the 90s i tend to think catholic leaders & established churches’ leaders stood up to Moi as he favoured evangelical churches, which meant a reduction of revenue. #SadakaBoycott may be another trigger
However, some people disagreed with the idea of boycotting sadaka stating that it would have little or no impact on the government plans
