In what appears to be an early sign of retreat, the Kenyan security is leading a targeted operation that seeks to evacuate all Cuban doctors working along the Kenya-Somalia border.
The Cuban doctors are said to have been on panic mode after search for their abducted partners entered day 4 without success.
Reports indicate that the doctors defied all government officials’ assurances that everything was in control, and had arranged for their own private transport back to Nairobi before the government joined in.
The two Cuban doctors attached to Mandera Hospital were abducted Friday morning on their way to work.
Their driver was arrested for questioning while a multi-agency police team is currently pursuing the militants to secure the doctors’ release.
In the Friday morning confrontation, a police officer attached to the Cuban doctors was shot dead as the suspected Shabaab attackers fled in an unmarked Toyota Probox vehicle to Somalia.
Five months ago an Italian was abducted by suspected Al-Shabaab militants who are said to have escaped with her into Boni Forest.
The Italian has yet to be recovered despite several operations being carried out in the area to find and rescue her.
