A 16-year-old boy from Kibera, Nairobi County, has impregnated three school going minors.
The victim met his boyfriend after a photoshoot and engaged in love after which she realized she was pregnant. However, his boyfriend denied responsibility.
“I met him during a photoshoot and from that we kept in touch with each other. After one and half months I realized I was pregnant. He afterwards denied the responsibility when I told him,” said one of the girls in a local TV.
The form one girl later discovered that his boyfriend was dating two other girls who were equally pregnant for him.
The other victim aged 13, who is two months pregnant states that she wasn’t actually in love with the charming boy but the wavering gifts he showered her with swayed her stand.
The latest reports from the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS) points out that girls in the age bracket of 15-19 years are either mothers or have engaged in sex.
The report also lists Narok, Homa Bay, West-Pokot, Tana River and Nyamira as counties with the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in Kenya.
Otieno, one of the victim’s parent, said that the traditions which bar parents from sleeping with their children, especially the male, in the same house contribute to this issue.
“You might think your daughter or son is sleeping but instead, she has sneaked out discos and dances,” he said.
These teenage pregnancies have elicited mixed reactions after the Court of Appeal judges proposed that the sexual legal age is reviewed from 18 years to 16 years.
