Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has said that coaches who lack an understanding of the Old Trafford side will fail when they are made managers of the club.
The former England international believes the club have moved away from what made it special in the last few years.
Ferdinand believes current caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should be given the permanent role when the time comes.
He said: ‘Manchester United is not like every other club and people who don’t understand that will fail when they go there. The pictures are on the walls to remind you of United’s history and in the last few years, the club has moved away from what makes it special.
‘Every player who walks through the door at United needs to have a certain DNA and too many have been signed by the club in recent years that lack those qualities.’
Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired at the end of the 2012/2013 season, Manchester United have had David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho as permanent managers, but all three have not satisfied the fans and the club with their performances.
With Solskjaer doing very well after replacing Jose Mourinho, but it remains to be seen if United will give him the job with a UEFA Champions League quarter-final fixture against Barcelona yet to come and a top four place in the English Premier League still to be secured.
Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has been linked with role, but it will not be an easy task trying to lure the Argentine from the North London side with chairman Daniel Levy a difficult negotiator.
Solskjaer has labelled the manager’s job at Man United his dream job, but that does not mean his dream will be fulfilled by a club he spent many years serving as a player.
United will be very careful in choosing a manager this time around having made a series of regrettable choices since the departure of Sir Alex in 2013.
Solskjaer may not get the job at the end of the season, but he has shown the club and its fans that with the right management and motivation, Manchester United can return to its glory days when it competed and won the biggest of trophies.
United’s next game is a Premier League fixture against Watford after the international break. They currently in fifth place on the Premier League table.
