‘Hatukufi Tukiangalia!’ Drama as Angry Passengers Arrest Overspeeding Matatu Driver

It is sad that despite all the deadly road accidents we have witnessed on Kenyan roads recently, some drivers are still flouting traffic rules with impunity, risking the lives of their passengers and other road users.

But in Kakamega town, passengers could not have non of this mediocrity from their Matatu driver, because Ugali is sweet and no one is ready to die now.

On Sunday, Nairobi bound passengers arrested the driver of the bus they were traveling in and handed him over to the police.

The driver was driving recklessly and breaking every traffic rule. Things got out of hand because he did not listen to his passengers who pleaded with him to reduce the speed.

Knowing that their life was at risk, they decided to act very fast before it became a tragic accident.

A group of passengers travelling from Kakamega to Nairobi on Sunday night were forced to take matters into their hands in fear for their lives.

The passengers took their bus driver, whom they accused of reckless driving, into custody and handed him over to police.

“When we approached the steep road after Riat in Kisumu, I knew we were done for,” Maurine Odari (one of the passengers) told The Standard.

Harizon Wechuli (one of the commuters), alongside several others, made their way to the front of the bus to try and take control of the situation before it led to any fatalities.

“We had to act or perish. The driver seemed unfit to drive. We literally had to lift him from the driver’s seat,” Mr Wechuli divulged.

The police reportedly arrived past the midnight hour and took the driver into custody before impounding the vehicle.
