Gay marriage is an expression of love not of desire, says Sir Elton

The renowned English musician. Sir Elton John has been married to his gay partner, David Furnish and have two sons, Zachary Jackson Levi, seven, and five-year-old Elijah Joseph Daniel, born using a surrogate mother. David is a Canadian film maker and a former advertising executive.

David and Elton first got together in 1993 and have remained together ever since. They were one of the first couples in the UK to get a civil partnership, hosting the ceremony in Windsor on December 21, 2005 the day the Civil Partnership Act came into force.

When gay marriage became legal in the UK in 2014, the pair married in Windsor on their ninth anniversary to cement their relationship. He says, ”To be worthy of someone’s love, you have to be brave enough and clear eyed enough to be honest with yourself and your partner. Almost 24 years ago, I met the person with whom I could be fully myself.

When we married in 2014, it felt like that fact was accepted by the world. For David and I, being able to openly love and commit to one another, and for that to be recognised and celebrated is what makes life truly worth living. That acceptance and support makes us want to be as kind, responsible and productive members of society, as well as the best parents that we can be.”
